The Chesapeake is the biggest estuary in the country, gathering water from more than 150 rivers and streams. For all its size, it averages only about 21 feet deep, so its channels and shoals tell much of its story.
This Chesapeake Bay clock keeps both the time and the tide. Set the tide hand at high tide and it keeps pace with the roughly 12-hour, 25-minute tidal cycle, so a glance shows whether the water is coming in or going out. The bay is set into the face, with the land cut from birch over water hand-stained grey-blue, and the clock takes one AA battery.
